Natural Dry Shampoo

Since taking a few steps towards using more natural products in our house the Bean has been all about trying natural beauty recipes! She's made a natural serum that helps strengthen eyelashes, she's made some detangler (that I love so much!) and she's made this natural dry shampoo! I'm a big fan of dry shampoo & since trying to wash my hair much less; dry shampoo has been a staple in my life! Sometimes, I use a little spritz of the traditional store bought dry shampoo, but for the most part, I've transitioned to only using this stuff!

This natural dry shampoo is SO easy to put together! In fact, we were running low, so I just whipped some up in 10 minutes yesterday as I was starting dinner! It's fast to make, it works super well and it's natural - I love it! The Bean found this recipe off a website called Wellness Mama, you can find the original HERE.

There are 2 different variations for this dry shampoo - a lighter version and a darker version. We've kind of adapted the original recipe to make it a mix between the two because we've got a little bit of everything in my house. I'm a brunette, my mom is blonde and the Bean is right smack in the middle with dirty blonde (she used to like to call it golden and claim she was Rapunzel- ha!). I will detail how I make the dry shampoo along with the little adaptations you could make depending on your hair color.

In total you will need 4 Tablespoons of powder - if you have light hair you could use all 4 Tablespoons of Arrowroot Starch. If you have dark hair, you could use 2 Tablespoons of Arrowroot starch and 2 Tablespoons of cocoa powder. But, here is what I do...
3 Tablespoons of Arrowroot starch in a small mixing bowl.

Add in 1 Tablespoon of cocoa powder. Mix the Arrowroot starch and the cocoa powder together until all the clumps are blended in.

Add in 5 drops of an essential oil of your choice. In the last batch, the Bean used peppermint essential oil and it smelled great - a little like mint chocolate! This time, I opted to use 5 drops of lavender and this batch smells great too!

We have this little container with perforations in the top and it works great as a dispenser for the dry shampoo. I spoon the dry shampoo powder into the container, secure the lid on tight and then it's ready to go!

The Wellness Mama recommends using an old makeup brush to brush the dry shampoo into your roots. I use this method if I have enough time and I want a little more of a polished look. For the most part, I just part my hair into different sections, and use the perforated container to shake a little dry shampoo into my hair. I re-part and continue this process until I covered the front part of my scalp. I usually don't bother with the bottom of my head.

I find this dry shampoo goes on a little heavy. At first, you can really tell there's something foreign in your hair. I should add that I find it more evident in my hair than my mom's. As a blonde, I find it blends more quickly and seamlessly into her hair. To ease this, once I've put some in my hair, I shake it through my roots. Then once I'm done, I flip my head upside down and shake the dry shampoo into my roots a little more. Then I let the dry shampoo sit for 5-10 mins before coming back to it and giving it a brush through with a regular brush.

Let me know if you have questions!

    1. Hahaha I do find I crave chocolate all day long when I use this dry shampoo! Maybe I should have included the chocolate craving as a side effect :)
