Cheeseburger Balls
The Bean went on a kick of finding recipes a couple of weeks ago. Some of them were great (this is one of the great ones) but some of them were downright weird (like the really really salty teriyaki chicken, but I will spare you from that)! My family brought these to the St-Patricks Day party that we went to and they were a hit! They make great hors-d'oeurves!
I made the pizza dough recipe from my favorite Stromboli recipe - you can find it HERE. Prep the pizza dough the exact same way. But once you get to the rolling out part, you can roll it out a little thinner than the stromboli. Once it's rolled out, cut it into strips that are about 5-6'' by 1-2.''
*You could buy pre-made pizza dough if you prefer!
Line a piece of cheddar cheese up with the cut piece of dough and place a frozen meatball on top of the cheese. I used President's Choice meatballs.
Roll the dough around the meatball and seal the ball shut with a little water.
And I took zero pictures of the next part because it was STRESSFUL! Bring a pot of 5 cups of water with 5 tablespoons of baking soda to a boil. Place a ball in the boiling water for 20-30 seconds. I tried doing two or three at a time and it got a little crazy! The baking soda splatters like crazy and keeping track of the balls was a nightmare!
When the cheeseburger balls are removed from the boiling water, transfer them right to a baking sheet lined with Parchment paper. Leave about 1 inch between each ball.
Beat an egg and brush it over the top of each cheeseburger ball. Then, sprinkle a little coarsely ground salt over the tops.
Bake the cheeseburger balls at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes - mine were in for 16 minutes! Let them cool a bit before serving them!
These were great served with ketchup and mustard and they make such a delicious lunch!
CHEESEBURGER BALLS
yield: 16-20 hors-d'oeurves
ingredients
1 recipe of Pizza dough
16-20 pieces of cheddar cheese
16-20 frozen meatballs
5 cups water
5 tablespoons baking soda
1 egg, beaten
sea salt
desired toppings (ketchup/mustard...)
directions
1. Cut the pizza dough into pieces that measure 5-6'' by 1-2.'' Line each piece of dough with a piece of cheddar cheese and a frozen meatball. Roll the dough around the meatball, so that it is completely covered. Use a bit of water to seal the dough.
2. Bring the pot of water and baking soda to a boil over high heat. Then, place each cheeseburger ball in the boiling water for 20-30 seconds. Once it's out of the boiling water, transfer each ball right onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
3. Beat the egg and brush a bit over the top of each cheeseburger ball, then sprinkle a little salt over the top of each one.
4. Bake the cheeseburger balls for 15-20 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
5. Let them cool for about 10 minutes before serving them with ketchup, mustard and any other desired toppings.
Enjoy!
